Back on July 19, Boing Boing linked to a photograph of a subway promotion of Mel Gibson’s Passion of the Christ in Japan over Christmas.

The window display in Ebisu subway station features two panels. On the right panel is Jesus carrying the cross surrounded by Roman soldiers, with the words in Japanese saying “Christ was killed”. On the left panel two Japanese Christmas shoppers carry a gift wrapped cross surrounded by commuters. Santa Claus makes an appearance, apparently carrying KFC. The words here say “Christmas was born”. The words down the bottom say, “The Truth that the Japanese never found, is right in this movie”.
Josh Jacobson of JDesign.com was swamped by viewers after the Boing Boing article , so created a stand alone blog, jjnotablog, with nothing but the Christmas photograph.
There have been a few knockers, as at Adrag.com, wondering how people got Easter and Christmas so mixed up. However it can be argued that this a very clever commentary on consumerism and would be just as applicable in a Western shopping mall.
Well, that could be true.
