Greater than our hearts
I finished tonight’s sermon with Ulrich Schaffer’s poem:
You might not remember,
but He died for you.
You might not believe it,
but He cares.
You might not consider yourself important,
but He does.
You might not accept it,
but He has forgiven you.
You might not sense Him,
but He is with you.
You might condemn yourself,
but He has chosen to love you.
He sees us differently.
He is so much more,
so much greater than our hearts.
Ulrich Schaffer is a German-born Canadian poet and photographer, living in Gibsons, on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia.
Ulrich’s love poetry collections, Love Reaches Out (Lion, 1976 & Harper Collins 1980), and A Growing Love (Lion, 1977 & Harper & Collins 1980), were great inspiration to me in the 1980s. Ennis and I had his version of 1 Corinthians read at our wedding in 1985. (20 years ago on August 31 - this last week!)
I read the poem above at my father’s funeral in 1992. It comes from the book of the same name, published by Hodder and Stoughton, UK in 1983.
Ulrich’s web site is in German but you can translate into English with Google.
