Carlton Midstrength Shed Men Stay Just A Little Longer

The Carlton Midstrength Shed TV campaign promoted the ‘Stay A Bit Longer’ beer to the Australian market in 2002 with Shed, Blender, Sandwich Maker and Sprung. In “Shed” a chap heads over to the bench with the dirty plates from dinner. “The toaster’s on the blink a bit this morning. Just going to pop into the shed to take a look at it.” His wife looks at him with a hint of suspicion. Another bloke is asked by his wife, “Where are you off to darl?” “I’m off to sharpen the mower blades”. The men meet out on the paths to their respective sheds. “Do you know how to fix that?” “No.” Another two guys arrive at their shed with a blender and a vacuum cleaner. The mower man turns on the grinder. A series of pulleys opens the walls dividing the sheds to make one large shed. “Hey John.” “Barry”. “Dave”. “Hey mate, how are ya?” “Hey boys how’re ya going?” The fridge opens to reveal a healthy supply of Carlton Midstrength beer in bottles and cans. We now have the makings of a pub full of punters. The fish on the wall joins in the song, “Stay just a little bit longer” as the pool table unfolds.

The series was created by the team at George Patterson Bates, Melbourne, including creative director Chris Dewey, art director Frank Trobbiani, copywriter Peter Murphy, and producer Fiona Gillies.

The TV ads were directed by Richard Gibson at Luscious Films, Sydney, with director of photography was Danny Pope. The fish on the wall, “Gibson River Classic”, could well be a reference to Richard!

Editor was Bernard Garry of Karl Marks.

The Carlton Midstrength ‘Great Aussie Shed’ promotion included a competion in which drinkers could win spot prizes and one of seven $500,000 sheds. The campaign ended January 2004 with over 200,000 entries. Carlton & United Breweries (CUB) is owned by Fosters.

Soundtrack

The music for the Shed campaign was a local version of “Stay”, written by Maurice Williams and made popular by Jackson Browne on his album, “Running on Empty”.

Original lyrics are as follows…

People stay just a little bit longer
We want to play, just a little bit longer
Now the promoter don’t mind
And the union don’t mind
If we take a little time
And we leave it all behind and sing
One more song…

Oh, won’t you stay just a little bit longer
Please, please, please, say you will, say you will…
