Pink was interviewed on Andrew Denton’s Enough Rope program tonight on ABC Australia. Andrew showed a short clip of Pink’s music videos, “Stupid Girls”, in which she critiques the message that woman have to dumb down to be successful. The music video clip for Stupid Girls was filmed in November 2005 and first aired in January 2006. It puts into graphic imagery the song from the album, I’m Not Dead. In it a young girl is offered two choices by a good angel and an evil angel.

Pink acts out the consequences of living only for image, by lampooning the poses taken by performers Paris Hilton, Jessica Simpson and Lindsay Lohan.
Through the music video women are shown being humiliated as they succumb to procedures and lifestyles in attempts to produce a popular body image. Girls use their toothbrushes to bring up their food in the bathroom. There are carwash shots reminiscent of Paris Hilton’s Carls Jr Burger ad and Jessica Simpson’s music video. At the end the little girl opts to play with a football rather than play music.
Pink, on PinksPage, says that a lot of people are relieved that someone has finally said something about the mindless epidemic of unhealthy girls out ther promoting consumerism and escapism.
And believe me, I am not the only one talking about it. And then there are those that are missing the point altogether, or just don’t like it coming from me. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being sexy, feeling sexy or dressing sexy. My point is only this: ‘SMART’ and ‘SEXY’ are not oil and water. They can actually work together. You don’t need to dub yourself down in order to be cute. You also don’t have to have the latest $10,000 hand-bag to be cool. You can have braces and play the trumpet and you are still just as important as the cheerleader or the skateboarder. I, on the other hand, had braces and played clarinet… which of course makes me even cooler.
