Neighbour Day provoked in Australia

Neighbour Day in Australia was promoted in an awareness campaign developed pro-bono by the advertising and production industries of Australia. The TV ad features a range of acts designed to provoke neighbourly communication. “Expect a knock on the door”. How do you make trouble in your neighbourhood? Drop a bra over the fence? Brings the drums outside? Bounce on your pogo stick? Break a window or two?

The ad was broadcast in Australia without charge on the Nine, Ten, SBS, Prime, WIN, NBN, Macquarie Southern Cross, Imparja, Foxtel and Austar networks as well as inflight on the Qantas On-Q channel plus public broadcasting channels ABC One and ABC Two.

Everyone who worked on it, including the actors and award-winning director, willingly gave their creativity, time and resources – without charge – to turn a concept into reality.

Neighbour Day

Held on the last Sunday in March every year, Neighbour Day encourages Australians to have better relationships with the people next door and across the street no matter where they live.

Neighbour Day was founded in Melbourne, Australia in 2003 by Andrew Heslop – a former National Communications Manager for Australian Red Cross and Project Manager for British Red Cross – after the remains of 75 year old Elsie Brown were discovered in her McKinnon home.

Mrs Brown had died in 2001 and had been forgotten by neighbours, friends and family until Victoria Police broke in to her home.
