Manjit Boparai has put together a music video for his multicultural song, “Song Australia”. Boparai, originally a teacher and author in India, emigrated to Australia in 1988. He took up the job of taxi driver in the mid 1990s when he and his family moved to Brisbane. The new job gave him an opportunity to tell visitors to Australia about how great and diverse Australia really is. The Brisbane taxi driver wrote the song in 2003, recorded an album and started playing and singing his songs to his rides.
In March 2005 film maker Faramarz K-Rahber took a ride in Boparai’s cab. When he heard about Boparai’s dream to make a Bollywood music video he set out to make it happen. Together they worked with SBS to make a documentary and music video. The story, shorts from the documentary and music video can all be found on www.songaustralia.com.au, and can be played in full on the DVD on sale there.
The Song Australia music video starts with a young immigrant family catching a ride in Boparai’s taxi. Boparai takes them on a magical tour of Australia, introducing them to Sydney Harbour Bridge, Cathy Freeman and other Australian icons. Manjit draws together a multicultural dance troupe who perform together in Cathy Freeman’s gymnasium. Click on the image below to play the video.
Fair Dinkum Aussie Lyrics
Aussie Aussie Aussie
I am a fairdinkum Aussie
We all are fairdinkum Aussie
Oi, Oi, Oi
Captain Cook’s Aboriginal trace
Changed the whole continent’s face,
Black brown white human race
Buddies mates our southern place
Harbour bridge opera face to face
Nation stops on Melbourne cup race…
Oi, Oi, Oi
G’day, Yassou, Konichiwa, Namuste
Bongiorno, Nihao, Slaam, Como Estas
Kebab, Pasta, Sushi, Chicken Massalla
Every taste of multicultural gala
Positive thoughts, no ill-will rumour
Understand Aussie sense of humour…
Oi, Oi, Oi
Gums, grevillea, foxtail palm land
Our kangaroo koala cockatoo’s land
All round ocean Uluru’s red land
Wild flower corals golden beachy sand
Didgeridoo, dragon, Scottish band
Proudly walking hand in hand
Oi, Oi, Oi
Open heart compassion foreign aid
Salute Anzacs, Australia day parade
Enjoy barby freedom not afraid
Our footy, swimmers, cricket brigade
All the champions of every Olympiad
Boparai we are nation A-grade
Oi, Oi, Oi
hi
