Fall Out Boy Works With Chimps In Thanks For The Memories

Chicago alternative/pop punk band Fall Out Boy has released the music video for Thnks Fr Th Mmrs, a mockumentary showing the making of a music video by a crew of chimpanzees. Patrick Stump, lead singer/guitarist, looks to bass guitarist Pete Wentz for confirmation that working with apes is going to be worthwhile. His fears are confirmed when the director Alan Furryson (a reference to the real director’s name) yells cut and suggests he would have been better working with Panic! At The Disco instead of FOB. It’s not as if Stump can’t relate to chimps. He’s shown playing chess with an orangutan later.

The director ambles back to his seat and uses his Nokia 5300 XpressMusic phone to message his contempt for the band to an acquaintance. The film crew cracks jokes at the band’s expense: “Shoot him from his good side”. “This guy doesn’t have a good side!” The stress of working with apes starts to wear thin. Drummer Andy Hurley storms out when he discovers a chimp has taken over his drum set, knocking over a monkey on a barrel, joined by lead guitarist Joe Trohman in a Chevy Tahoe. Pete calls William Beckett (lead singer for The Academy) on his mobile phone while having his face made up by chimps. In the dressing room lead guitarist he applies TAG Body Spray’s “All-Nighter” fragrance only to discover a pair of chimp’s arms caressing his chest. He’s given lessons on how to kiss a woman (Kim Kardashian) by the director. He finally loses his cool though when the director starts fondling the woman while the band is playing. He takes his guitar and knocks down the “B” from the stage’s “FOB”, leaving it spelling F.O.

Lyrics for Thnks fr th Mmrs (Thanks For The Memories)

I’m gonna make you bend and break (it sent you to me without wings)
Say a prayer, but let the good times roll
In case God doesn’t show (let the good times roll, let the good times roll)
And I want these words to make things right
But it’s the wrongs that make the words come to life
Who does he think he is?
If that’s the worst you’ve got, better put your fingers back to the keys

One night and one more time
Thanks for the memories
Even though they weren’t so great
He tastes like you only sweeter

One night yeah and one more time
Thanks for the memories
Thanks for the memories
See he tastes like you only sweeter
Ohhhhhh

Been looking forward to the future
But my eyesight is going bad
In this crystal ball
It’s always cloudy except for (except for)
When you look into the past (look into the past)
One night stand. (One night stand, off!)

One night and one more time
Thanks for the memories
Even though they weren’t so great
He tastes like you only sweeter

One night yeah one more time
Thanks for the memories

Thanks for the memories
See, he tastes like you only sweeter
ohhhh

(They say) I only think in the form of crunching numbers
In hotel rooms, collecting page-six lovers
Get me out of my mind
Get you out of those clothes
I’m a line away
From getting you into the mood (wa-ooooohhh)

One night and one more time
Thanks for the memories
Even though they weren’t so great
He tastes like you only sweeter

One night yeah one more time
Thanks for the memories
Thanks for the memories
See, he tastes like you only sweeter

One night and one more time (one more night, one more time)
Thanks for the memories
Even though they weren’t so great (even though they weren’t so great)
He tastes like you only sweeter

One night yeah one more time (one more night, one more time)
Thanks for the memories (for the memories)
Thanks for the memories (for the memories)
See, he tastes like you only sweeter

  1. I am very concerned about the Fall Out Boy Video “Thanks for the Memoriesâ€? which features chimpanzees, an orang-utan and a capuchin monkey. To see these highly intelligent and sensitive animals being forced to wear clothes and made to look like clowns for a music video is very disturbing. Great apes and monkeys continue to be used in the entertainment industry but most people are totally unaware of the terrible conditions that these animals have to endure to produce these films/commercials. Not to mention that when they get older and become too big and dangerous to handle they are discarded like rubbish.

I am a representative of the Mona Foundation and we see the consequences of chimpanzees being used in the entertainment industry every day at our primate sanctuary in Spain; all of our rescued chimpanzees have psychological scars as a result of being forced to perform in TV adverts or circus acts.

Apes used in entertainment are torn form their mothers at a very early age and are destined for a life of misery and exploitation. According to Sarah Baeckler, a leading primatologist, who spent a year working undercover a major Hollywood animal training facility, its simply not interesting enough for a young chimp to sit still and pay attention for long periods of time. Therefore animal trainers use the fear of pain to make them do what they are told. She has revealed that she “…saw trainers punch the chimps in the back, kick them in the head, throw their whole bodies into pummelling them with their fists. They hit them using rocks, mallets, and sawed-off broom handles… I saw evidence of using a cattle prod. The chimpanzees are punished for things that are completely normal chimpanzee behavioursâ€?. In addition, Dr. Jane Goodall DBE, a world-renowned primatologist and campaigner against the use of apes in entertainment has pointed out many times that when you see a chimp “smileâ€? on TV, what you are actually seeing is a “grin of fearâ€?.

I hope after reading this information that you will reconsider ever using chimpanzees again in any of your music videos. There is simply no excuse to use live animals on TV today because alternatives such as computer graphics, animations, and robotics are readily available to the TV and the music industry.

  2. 1 fan lost here.

I would leave a lengthy comment about how apes (and all other animals) should not be used for entertainment, however Dr Docherty has already brought this to your attention.

Find a way for people to enjoy your music video without pissing off all those of us who care about the welfare of animals.

  3. hey.. whats the big fuss abt?? they erent makin fun of apes! they r makin fun of producers or maybe their previous producers.. i didnt understand y they used apes at first but after an explanation by my friend, i realised tt its very creative of them. il still respect the fact tt u guys pity the apes but hey! i bet u.. if there is a video there will be ppl takin care of the apes.. n btw Amanda, 1 fan lost huh? a bit rash dunt u think?? FOB rocks man! n the vedio is nt abt fall out apes, its abt FALL OUT BOYS!! n yea.. FOB.. keep rocking!! i lov u!!

  4. This band rocks! If I didn’t have Pete Wentz, then I would die! also, the video is so tight! I can’t believe that this song isn’t th 1 song in the USA!!!! i don’t know why evry1 hates the fact that the apes are in the video, i mean the video rox

  5. Dr Docherty has put it much better than I could, the point is that these apes should not be doing stuff like this.

I can’t believe that people think it’s OK to make a vid like this.

    Have some respect, guys.

  6. Hey I am with my best friend morgyn and we are having a sleepover i just had to show her this awesome video! it is the coolest thing i have ever seen no harm done with the monkeys! IT WAS CREATIVE AND out of this world! Pete if your there, I love you!

  7. wow….that is all i have to say about the previous comments. this video is one of their best videos. who the hell cares if there are friggin apes in the video! they did it creatively and IF u watched the making of the video u would see that there were professional trainers there. so i really dont see the big deal. people just wanna make a big deal about nothing cuz all this world is nowadays is drama drama and more drama. people need to stop overthinkin this kind of stuff. and news flash…if u dont like it. DONT WATCH IT! and stop complaining about nothing cuz there is absolutly nothing to complain about.

this video is one of the best FOB videos and is a great song. all of u need to lighten up. its JUST a music video. so just get over yourselves.

ps…yea i love me sum FOB!!!!! great vid. great vid.

  8. Fall out boy fan are morons. Oh, so the fact they had trainers there makes it okay!? yea, let’s take you from your home, parade you about, make you do tricks, beat you as part of training and all watch it.

  9. Give me a break, now everyone hates FOB because this vid? das retarded, FOB is koo bcause their music, not their vid! FOB ROX AND U ALLLLLLLLLLLLL NO IT

  10. i love fall out boy yeahhhhhhh and i amazing pete wentz i love you i love you i love you ilove you i love you……….

  11. I think perhaps what the younger of you don’t understand is that the argument isn’t against Fall Out Boy itself, but that using primates in entertainment is unethical.

Yes, the video may be entertaining, but no, even with trainers there the animals are still being exploited. It is the trainer themselves which are propagating the exploitation. To say that it’s ok to use the chimps because it makes the video good is like saying, it’s ok to use child labour because your new Nike trainers are shiny.

  12. its not cruel. the monkeys look like theyre havin fun and i bet theyre well looked after, if u were a chimp wot would u rather do, be in a music vid or be in an enclosure? thats like sayin its cruel to train dogs. though i admit gettin it to kiss petes ass is pushing it…
