Leonardo DiCaprio has teamed up with will i. am, Tobey Maguire, and Forest Whitaker to create “5 Friends Vote”, a PSA campaign encouraging American youth to register to vote. A 4:45 minute video, produced by DiCaprio’s production company, Appian Way, features well known actors and performers taking the journey from deep cynicism about the US presidential elections to a commitment to action.
Jonah Hill appears as the cynical twenty-something young adult, who needs to be convinced that voting has anything to do with him. Jonah is joined by a range of well known personalities who begin by telling viewers not to vote. The mood changes to “Don’t vote unless…”. Finally there’s a push to have people get online and register at the Google Maps powered US elections registration site. There’s time allowed for viewers to go to the site and register. Comedienne Sarah Silverman even offers to take her bra off while she’s waiting…
