Greenpeace Pencil Urchins

Greenpeace has taken a line out of Amnesty International’s campaign history with a set of print advertisements featuring the phrase, “Every signature helps save our seas.” We’re shown three sea urchins, Asteridae, Aurora, Seethe, made of colored pencils.

The Pencils campaign was developed at Ogilvy Johannesburg, South Africa, by creative director Jonathan Beggs, art directors Mike Martin and Jennifer Maestre, copywriter Alison Hingle and photographer Dean Powell.

The pencil sculptures are from the creative collection of Jenni Maestre. She takes hundreds of pencils, cuts them into 1-inch sections, drills a hole in each section (to turn them into beads), sharpens them all and sews them together.
