Depeche Mode Personal Jesus

Depeche Mode released their hit Personal Jesus in the UK in 1989, supplementing the success of the single with a music video directed by Anton Corbijn. The music video shows members of the band travelling to a ranch in the Tabernas Desert, Almería, Spain, providing a Spaghetti Western feel to the track.

Prior to the release of Personal Jesus, advertisements were placed in the personal columns of UK regional newspapers with the words “Your own personal Jesus.” Later, the ads included a phone number one could dial to hear the song. The ensuing controversy helped propel the single to number 13 on the UK charts, becoming one of Depeche Mode’s biggest sellers. In the US, it was their first gold single. In September 2006, Personal Jesus was voted by readers of music monthly Q as one of the 100 greatest songs of all time.

Personal Jesus Credits

Performing in Personal Jesus were David Gahan (vocals), Andy Fletcher (keyboards) and Alan Wilder (keyboards), Martin Gore (keyboards).

Lyrics for Personal Jesus

Your own personal Jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who cares
Your own personal Jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who’s there

Feeling unknown
And you’re all alone
Flesh and bone
By the telephone
Lift up the receiver
Ill make you a believer

Take second best
Put me to the test
Things on your chest
You need to confess
I will deliver
You know I’m a forgiver

Reach out and touch faith
Reach out and touch faith

Your own personal Jesus…

Feeling unknown
And you’re all alone
Flesh and bone
By the telephone
Lift up the receiver
Ill make you a believer

I will deliver
You know I’m a forgiver

Reach out and touch faith

Your own personal Jesus

Reach out and touch faith
